Everyone knows the stats: nine Le Mans 24 Hours wins (and six at the Sebring 12 Hours). Truly Tom Kristensen is in a class of one in the world of premier endurance racing.
We also know the headline stories. The ‘best driver never to race in Formula 1’, the horrendous DTM crash in 2007, the team captain of the returning Bentley boys.
But a life and career is so much more than the headlines, and TK’s story has plenty of depth to it.
Adapted from the award-winning Danish-language original, Mr Le Mans features extra contributions from esteemed former colleagues Gary Watkins and Charles Bradley, plus leading Danish motorsport writer Nils Finderup.
The addition of these trackside testimonies, and the presence of Audi motorsport doyen Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (who wrote the foreword), ensures this is the definitive story and a must-read for all serious motorsport fans.
Some of the translations from Danish to English are a bit inelegant and a couple of typos have slipped through the net, but that doesn’t distract from the quality of the storytelling, which is at its best when it ventures off track and confronts the human and emotional challenges he faced.
