Mick Schumacher will have a grid penalty even if he is able to take part in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying after his crash in free practice.
Schumacher lost the rear of his Haas through the fast Turn 11 left-hander at the end of the middle sector at the Hungaroring, and hit the barriers heavily.
He apologised to his team over the radio and said “I know what it means”, a likely reference to the repair job and the cost for a team keeping its spending at a minimum this season.
Schumacher’s chassis is OK after the crash but he does need a new gearbox.
That means he will get a five-place grid penalty, although his participation in qualifying is a doubt anyway.
Haas is working to replace the gearbox in time for the rookie to get on-track at some point in Q1.
Schumacher was unharmed in the crash, which registered a force of more than 30G and mandated a trip to the medical centre.
