What happened in third Hungarian GP F1 practice

Lewis Hamilton topped the final practice session ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix in a session interrupted by a crash for Formula 1 rookie Mick Schumacher.

Key moments:

> Hamilton 0.088 faster than Verstappen

> Schumacher crash caused red flag

> Ferrari fourth and fifth

> Perez one second slower than Verstappen in P7

Schumacher lost his Haas through the Turn 11 right-hander and shunted into the barriers with around 15 minutes of the session, causing the second red flag of the weekend following Yuki Tsunoda’s FP1 crash.

The F1 rookie sustained significant damage to his car and told his team “he knows what that means”, perhaps indicating that Schumacher is aware his Haas team will face a race against time to repair his car for qualifying and he could be at risk of a gearbox change and subsequent grid penalty.

The session resumed with 10 minutes remaining with the majority of the field bolting on fresh soft tyres and undertaking their qualifying simulations.

Antonio Giovinazzi was released into the path of Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin in the pitlane and clipped Stroll’s rear-right with his front wing. Both appeared to emerge without damage but the incident is under investigation.

Out on track it was Hamilton who went fastest with a 1m16.826s, edging out Max Verstappen by just 0.088s.

Earlier in the session, Mercedes had to remove a pin from the surface of Hamilton’s front-right tyre but he was able to carry on with those tyres.

His team-mate Valtteri Bottas completed the top three ahead of the Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

McLaren’s Lando Norris pipped the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez to sixth place, while Daniel Ricciardo made it two McLaren drivers in the top eight.

Alpine’s Fernando Alonso was ninth-fastest ahead of Stroll, AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and his team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Nicholas Latifi cracked the front-left mirror on his Williams when he ran wide over a kerb, in similar fashion to what his team-mate George Russell did in FP1 at Silverstone.

He finished in 17th place, one place behind Russell and one place ahead of Giovinazzi, who is also under investigation for blocking Gasly as well as the pitlane contact.
