When you think of late-1980s Formula 1 rivalries that erupted into controversy, it’s usually Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost that spring to mind.

But Nigel Mansell was in the thick of their storyline too – in a particularly consequential way as the 1989 title fight between Prost and Senna approached its denouement.

In the latest episode of our classic F1 stories podcast Bring Back V10s, Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith join Glenn Freeman to explore the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix, when Mansell was black-flagged, collided with Senna, and earned himself a race ban.

That day at Estoril was also a glorious one for the underdogs – featuring Onyx’s sole podium (on a weekend it sacked one of its drivers) and the only F1 lap ever led by a Minardi. Naturally, those milestones aren’t neglected by our panel.
