IndyCar Podcast: A new points leader, Grosjean’s oval debut

The latest episode of The Race IndyCar Podcast takes a look at a bonkers Gateway round where driving standards were in the spotlight, a new points leader emerged and Romain Grosjean made his oval debut.

Regular host and strong short oval driver JR Hildebrand is joined by The Race’s American Editor Jack Benyon, as the pair delve into Scott Dixon’s claim that driving standards in 2021 have been “crazy and erratic” at times.

The race – won by Josef Newgarden – was littered with contact and crashes, one of which wiped out Dixon and erstwhile points leader Alex Palou. Hildebrand and Benyon assess the title picture after Pato O’Ward took over the lead with three races remaining.

Hildebrand breaks down the enormity of the task facing Grosjean with a driver’s-eye view of his performance, particularly being impressed with Grosjean’s car control when the latter made errors that could have and did put some drivers in the wall.
