Podcast: Why Abt’s prank is endemic of a wider problem

The latest episode of The Race Esports Podcast covers the Daniel Abt Formula E imposter scandal and the subsequent fallout that led to the German losing his real-life Audi FE drive.

Abt drafted in pro simracer Lorenz Hoerzing to race in his place in a virtual FE race, having planned it as a practical joke that would be explained in a subsequent video.

But with Hoerzing’s performance raising suspicions, Abt’s ploy was uncovered before that, and that kicked off a chain of events that resulted in the end of his Audi FE tenure.

The Race’s FE correspondent Sam Smith and simracing correspondent Nathan Quinn join podcast host Claire Cottingham and FE commentator Jack Nicholls to discuss the Abt situation.

While there is sympathy for Abt, Audi’s logic in taking such a “harsh” decision is explained, and the conversation also touches upon how his behaviour is part of a larger problem when it comes to pro drivers’ attitude to the current virtual events.

Away from the Abt topic, F1 Esports driver Lukas Blakeley is invited on to speak about his win this past weekend in the F1 exhibition race at Monaco for Racing Point and his experiences in the The Race All-Star Series powered by ROKiT Phones.
