The FIA’s initial reaction to the Japanese Grand Prix incident in which Pierre Gasly encountered a recovery vehicle on track in heavy spray was to point out that the AlphaTauri Formula 1 driver had been driving too fast after the red flag had been called.
But amid outrage from F1 drivers, fans and teams, a “thorough review” has now been launched by the governing body.
And even the penalty awarded to Gasly included an acknowledgement that seeing the truck on track would have been a “shock”.
Gasly has no doubt that he “would be dead” if he had hit the vehicle.
