Fernando Alonso’s estimate that misfortune has cost him 50-70 points already in the 2022 Formula 1 season might be a slight exaggeration.
But there’s still little doubt that Alonso could be doing better if he was in more competitive – and reliable – machinery than the 2022 Alpine has turned out to be most of the time.
It’s a familiar story for his career too, with a driver who most agree has operated at a remarkably high level for two full decades having not won a title for 16 years and not won a race since 2013.
So Alpine is far from the first team that hasn’t made the best use of Alonso’s ability.
