Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in a wet Friday afternoon free practice session ahead of Formula 1’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver set his fastest lap during a short run on full wet tyres with roughly 35 minutes remaining.
At the time that moved him above the Racing Points of Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez, who set the early pace in a session where barely any drivers ventured out in the first 45 minutes.
Shortly after Vettel set his best time, Valtteri Bottas went out and his put Mercedes second, noting that his tyres were cold and “getting better through the lap” before he returned to the pits.
With 20 minutes to go Carlos Sainz Jr was the next driver to move ahead of Stroll, putting his McLaren third.
He then went out on intermediates, but like every other driver who tried the green-marked tyre he returned to the pits immediately, declaring the track was too wet.
Stroll and Perez ended the session fourth and fifth, ahead of Pierre Gasly, who didn’t get any running during FP1 while Honda carried out checks on his power unit.
Max Verstappen only appeared at the very end of the session and put in one timed lap to go seventh, moving him ahead of Romain Grosjean, Kimi Raikkonen and Charles Leclerc, who completed the top 10.
While every car appeared on track for at least one lap, seven drivers didn’t set a time due to the conditions.
Renault drivers Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo did one lap each on the intermediate tyre and weren’t seen again, while Lewis Hamilton – the pace-setter in the morning’s opening practice – did the same.
Hamilton stayed in his car until there were five minutes remaining, before deciding to climb out and leave the garage.
Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Alex Albon appeared late on but complained that the car felt like it had less grip on wets than on intermediates, and he did not set a time.
The Williams pair and Kevin Magnussen were the other drivers not to complete a timed lap.
