George Russell’s chances of asserting himself over superstar Formula 1 team-mate Lewis Hamilton are the focus of the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast.

Russell beat Hamilton in the championship season and became only the third driver to outscore the seven-time world champion over a season after Jenson Button (2011) and Nico Rosberg (2016), but The Race ranked the senior driver slightly higher in its end-of-season top 10.

But Russell’s first year in frontrunning machinery, which yielded his first pole and grand prix victory, created an impressive foundation and the battle between the pair could be one of the big stories of the 2023 season.

We look at Russell’s evolution as a driver, stretching back to his first season in car racing in the BRDC F4 Championship in 2014, which Scott Mitchell-Malm, who joins Mark Hughes and Edd Straw for this podcast, covered.

There’s also a look at his progress through the junior ranks and what he learned during three seasons with struggling Williams, and the areas where he still needs to improve if he’s to achieve his ambition of becoming F1 world champion.
