Mexico will remain on the Formula 1 calendar until at least the 2025 season after agreeing a contract extension.
The Mexico City race has been a successful and popular part of the F1 schedule since it rejoined in 2015, although did drop off in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But it has only been on a short-term contract because the 2021 race was the first since the organisers switched to a new business model, having lost the state funding that bankrolled the first five races.
Last year organisers felt that more tickets could have been sold if the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez had greater capacity.
As Mexico did not ‘roll over’ its abandoned 2020 race, the 2022 grand prix marked the end of the new short-term deal.
A new contract has already been agreed though and will begin with next year’s race on October 29.
“I am very pleased to announce that Formula 1 will continue to race in Mexico City for another three years under this new agreement,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
“Every year the race attracts a large number of passionate fans and the atmosphere is incredible, and I know everyone will be excited by this news.
“I want to thank Claudia Sheinbaum, the Head of Government for Mexico City, and [race promoter] Alejandro Soberon and his team for their ongoing commitment to Formula 1 and the continued success of the event.”
