Michael Schumacher’s famous debut with Jordan and sudden switch to Benetton are the focus of the latest episode of our Bring Back V10s classic F1 podcast.
The future seven-time world champion was racing in sportscars with Mercedes when he got the call-up from Jordan, after the team’s regular driver Bertrand Gachot was sent to prison for an altercation with a London taxi driver.
Gary Anderson, who designed the Jordan 191 Schumacher made his debut in, joins Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw to look back at how the deal came together, and why Eddie Jordan wasn’t that impressed with Schumacher before he signed him.
We then look at how Schumacher turned heads in qualifying, why his race only lasted a few seconds, how Jordan’s other car could have won the Belgian GP that day, and how things unravelled to result in Benetton snapping Schumacher up for the very next race at Monza.
As well as looking at how a full-time drive with Jordan could have damaged the early part of Schumacher’s career, we also revisit a lesser-known contract dispute that followed in the early part of 1992.
