Manx brothers Ryan and Callum Crowe have joined a rare cohort of home heroes at the Isle of Man TT by winning the opening Sidecar TT of this year’s event.
They have followed in the footsteps of their five-time winning father Nick by improving on last year’s podium finish and topping the opening race of the year in the absence of previous class dominating force, the Birchall brothers.
The Crowes controlled Saturday’s race to win by a massive 27 seconds from last year’s runner-up Peter Founds and passenger Jevan Walmsley, while it was Founds’ brother Alan and their nephew Rhys Gibbons who won a close-fought battle for third by only nine seconds.
The pair first made their debut in 2019 before COVID led to the TT being suspended - but bounced back in 2023 with a very strong performance that sent them into this year’s race among the favourites, especially after most successful passenger ever Tom Birchall announced his retirement.
In the end, though, his brother Ben Birchall (who has won the past 11 sidecar races) and new passenger Kevin Rousseau were forced to withdraw fom the race after a crash on Friday night left them fighting to get their outfit ready in time.
That paved the way for a popular home win, with the Crowes admitting afterwards that the support on the final laps was something special.
“Our dream was to win a TT,” Ryan Crowe said, “and we’ve just done it. What a race, that’s mega.”
“The team I’ve got is just amazing,” his brother added, “and all the crowd out there waving us on, it was unbelievable.”
They’ll have a chance to defend their crown against Birchall later in the week, too, with the second of the week’s two races scheduled for Wednesday.
