Suzuki MotoGP rider Alex Rins looks very unlikely to take part in tomorrow’s opening round of the 2020 season at Jerez, after a high-speed crash during the final moments of qualifying left him with a dislocated shoulder.
He crashed at the fast Turn 11 in the closing minutes of the session, after having already had a slow-speed tumble only minutes before at the end of Q1.
An initial examination suggests he has both dislocated and fractured his shoulder, and he has been declared unfit for tomorrow’s race.
Rins has been transferred to hospital in Jerez for further examination, with an MRI scan planned to assess the amount of damage to his left shoulder.
He was left working to come through from Q1 to Q2 in hot conditions after an on-track altercation with Marc Marquez, with the reigning champion slowing under yellow flags and blocking Rins’ flying lap in practice three.
The injury is disastrous news for Rins given the frantic schedule ahead for the delayed MotoGP championship.
With two races in only 10 days and almost no gaps between now and the end of the 13-round season in November, he’s likely to face a serious dent to his championship aspirations.
