KTM rider Miguel Oliveira ended Friday MotoGP practice at the Sachsenring on top after setting the pace in the afternoon session.

Fresh off winning the Catalan Grand Prix, Oliveira outpaced points leader Fabio Quartararo by two tenths of a second during a late rush of fast laptimes.

Having been deposed by Oliveira in the opening minutes of the session, FP1 pacesetter Marc Marquez had retaken the top spot by two tenths with 20 minutes left on the clock using a fresh medium rear tyre.

But when other riders went out on fresh softs in the final minutes, Sachsenring star Marquez was shuffled down the order, eventually ending up just 12th.

Quartararo’s team-mate Maverick Vinales made it two factory Yamahas in the top three, while Suzuki’s Alex Rins continued to impress on his return from injury, taking fourth place.

Despite a second Friday crash, Pol Espargaro led Honda’s contingent in fifth, ahead of LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami and the other Espargaro – Aprilia rider Aleix.

Ducati rider Jack Miller was only ninth but should’ve been higher up, forced to bail out of several fast laps in the final minutes of FP2.

Miller’s team-mate Francesco Bagnaia was a puzzling 22nd and last, over two tenths behind the second-to-last rider – his mentor Valentino Rossi (Petronas Yamaha).

Rossi had a crash at Turn 1, while his half-brother Luca Marini crashed his VR46 Ducati on two occasions in FP2 – both times at Turn 13.
