Bastianini leads Ducati 1-2-3-4 in second Misano MotoGP practice

Ducati’s 2023 factory signing Enea Bastianini set the pace in the second MotoGP Friday practice session at Misano, leading a Ducati 1-2-3-4.

Key moments:

> Bastianini towed by future team-mate Bagnaia
> Quartararo and Espargaro firmly in top 10
> Morbidelli finds form in 10th
> Bagnaia carrying grid drop
> Crashes for Bagnaia, Zarco, Rins and Oliveira

Bastianini tucked in behind his 2023 team-mate Francesco Bagnaia during late-session push laps, and though Bagnaia went quickest, his lead lasted mere moments as Bastianini crossed the start-finish line with a time a tenth better.

That time, a 1m31.517s, ensured he would top the session ahead of Bagnaia, whose current team-mate Jack Miller and Pramac Ducati’s Johann Zarco completed the top four.

Both Bagnaia and Zarco shrugged off crashes earlier in the session, the former at Turn 13 and the latter at Turn 1. Bagnaia, however, now has a three-place grid penalty hanging over him after he’d got in the way of Alex Marquez (LCR Honda) and Bastianini late in FP1.

Championship leader Fabio Quartararo was fifth, coming up just 0.006s short of denying Ducati its 1-2-3-4.

Maverick Vinales was sixth for Aprilia – which was relatively remarkable as he hadn’t improved on a fresh soft rear late in the session.

Despite this, he ended up 0.047s clear of team-mate Aleix Espargaro.

Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati), Marco Bezzecchi (VR46 Ducati) and Franco Morbidelli (Yamaha) completed the top 10, despite Bezzecchi having his best laptime deleted for track limits. His VR46 team-mate Luca Marini had a lap deleted, too, which proved more costly as this dropped him out of the top 10.

There were falls for Alex Rins (Suzuki) and Miguel Oliveira (KTM), the former ending up in a heated argument with a marshal after his tumble.

Both of them risk being consigned to contesting Q1 as there is a threat of rain hanging over the Saturday morning practice.

Suzuki’s Joan Mir stand-in Kazuki Watanabe was again last, but got slightly closer to the pace, which allowed him to just clear the required 105 percent cut-off.
