Fernando Alonso has had a rollercoaster start to his 2020 Indianapolis 500 attempt with Arrow McLaren SP.
The future Renault Formula 1 driver and Triple Crown hopeful started off the week well with strong race pace simulations. But then he crashed in practice on Thursday afternoon and, like many other Chevrolet runners, subsequently failed to negate Honda’s dominance.
Alonso will start the 500 from 26th. If he’s going to win from that far back, he’ll have to break an 84-year record to do it, but with a pack of fast race cars towards the back of the grid, there’s every chance we’ll see some of them – perhaps including Alonso – working together to move forward.
Jack Benyon breaks down Alonso’s chances and rounds up some of the other significant storylines from the first week of action, including the Andretti curse, Penske’s struggles and a spectacular crop of rookies.
