The second day of Indianapolis 500 practice has been called off due to rain.

Drizzle fell just before the anticipated start of on-track action at midday local time, and continued to fall intermittently before becoming heavier just after 2pm.

With no sign of it abating and the fact that it takes two hours to dry the track, the organiser made the call to cancel Wednesday’s action.

On Tuesday, track action was up on 2021 with more laps completed, perhaps in anticipation of the weather being poor on Wednesday.

That first day was topped by Takuma Sato with a best speed of 228.939mph ahead of Scott Dixon – who was one of four Ganassi drivers in the top six.

Thursday is due to be a warm day, but Friday – when drivers are given an extra boost to simulate the engine specification they will use in qualifying on Saturday – is set to be extremely windy, which could hamper teams’ progress in terms of perfecting set-ups for qualifying.

There is also a chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday, too, which could disrupt qualifying – which features a new format this year.

IndyCar has also announced that Monday’s practice session will take place an hour later than originally scheduled, from 1pm-3pm, to allow teams that took part in Sunday’s qualifying more time to change their race engines.
