1 min read

This week’s The Race IndyCar Podcast features a frank and honest interview with Al Unser Jr following the release of his book A Checkered Past, while newly crowned Indy Lights champion Kyle Kirkwood also makes an appearance.

Unser Jr – joined by his book’s author Jade Gurss on this episode – addresses some of the high moments of his career, along with the low points which included mental health battles, substance abuse, arrests and even contemplating suicide on his 50th birthday.

Having found religion, recently remarried and now working to help young drivers break into motorsport, Unser Jr is in a better place but has still revealed all in his book with the goal of helping other people in similar situations.

Kirkwood joins American Editor Jack Benyon to discuss wrapping up the Indy Lights championship at Mid-Ohio last weekend, earning Kirkwood over $1.1 million towards three races in an IndyCar seat including the Indy 500.

He discusses his record as one of the most successful junior drivers ever – winning three consecutive titles as a rookie – picks his best moment from his journey and contemplates what’s next in 2022.
