Alex Palou joins this week’s The Race IndyCar Podcast fresh from becoming the Indianapolis 500’s fastest ever polesitter.
The first Spaniard to win an Indy 500 pole is in good form, discussing why the pole led to such an emotional celebration, how his analytical nature helped to achieve it and his motivation and desire to score more poles, this being his first on an oval.
The 2021 IndyCar champion also looks at how his Ganassi team-mates – especially Scott Dixon – helped him ahead of his pole run, and how the changing conditions meant he thought his chance for pole on Sunday had slipped away before turning it around for the final showdown.
Together in person, co-hosts Jack Benyon and JR Hildebrand also break down the bump day drama where Graham Rahal was (temporarily, as it turned out) bumped from the event by team-mate Jack Harvey. Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s woes and the bump day format are discussed. The episode was recorded shortly before the news that Rahal will race in the Indy 500 after all due to Stefan Wilson’s injury.
Callum Ilott also joins the show, having been one of the stories of the week – going to a back-up car that he had just 12 laps in before delivering a run that got him in the field.
AJ Foyt Racing’s resurgence and Abel Motorsport’s excellent debut are also covered off in this bumper episode.
