Alfa Romeo Formula 1 reserve and Ferrari test driver Callum Ilott will race for Juncos Racing as it steps back up to IndyCar competition at Portland next week.

Ilott was the runner-up in the 2020 Formula 2 Championship to Mick Schumacher and has spent 2021 racing a GT3 Ferrari in various competitions including at the Le Mans 24 Hours, and is now set to make his IndyCar debut.

“I am pleased and excited to be announcing I will be racing with Juncos Hollinger Racing at Portland,” Ilott said.

“This will be my first time in the NTT IndyCar Series and running in the United States, which will be a bit of a change from running on the European side.

“I am looking forward to working with the team during this first phase of their development and am proud to be a part of this opportunity to build into their future embarkment.

“I would like to thank the Ferrari Driver Academy for allowing me to take this opportunity and for Ricardo Juncos and Brad Hollinger for bringing me onboard the team.”

Juncos hasn’t competed in IndyCar since 2019 when Kyle Kaiser bumped Fernando Alonso out of the Indy 500.

It has been looking to return to IndyCar competition since and recently confirmed its intent to do the full 2022 season alongside the last three races this year.

The team had confirmed it could trial different drivers across the final races of 2021, and it is not yet clear if Ilott will race again for the team beyond Portland.

He will need to miss Alfa Romeo and Ferrari’s home Grand Prix at Monza in order to compete at Portland.

Also announced on Wednesday, Oliver Askew will return to IndyCar competition in the last three races of the year in Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s third car.

Ilott’s fellow F2 racer Christian Lundgaard drove that car last time it raced, at Indianapolis, last month.
