Max Verstappen will return to top-flight virtual competition this weekend with a wildcard entry in the IMSA Esports Global Championship season finale.

The four-time Formula 1 world champion is renowned for his simracing exploits as part of vicenarian outfit Team Redline, partaking in regular Twitch streams between his F1 commitments.

IMSA’s officially sanctioned esports competition will now welcome the 63-time grand prix winner as one of two wildcards for the final round, which uses the iRacing platform on PC.

The 2.4-hour race will use the Daytona International Speedway’s road course on which the real-world IMSA SportsCar Championship opens its season with its 24-hour race in a fortnight.

Verstappen will partner talented simracer Gustavo Ariel in a Verstappen.com Racing Acura ARX-06 GTP, having tested the real-world version of the car - Acura's entry in IMSA's top class - at a promotional event ahead of last year's Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Last year, Verstappen won the top split of iRacing’s 24 Hours of Spa event for Redline alongside Diogo C Pinto, Chris Lulham and Florian A Lebigre. He competed in the early hours of the morning ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Redline is currently leading the supporting GTD class standings of the IMSA esports competition and is second in the leading GTP category.

The second wildcard entry for the Michelin 240 race will be the Scuderia Ferrari HP Esports Team in the GTD category with virtual driving experts Lorenzo Manfredotti and Ole Steinbraten.

Live coverage of the race begins on the IMSA and iRacing YouTube channels (or via the embed above) on Sunday, January 12, from 6.45 pm UTC. It will include a pre-race preview show, the Countdown to Green powered by Traxion.GG.
