Oliver Rowland responded to his painful first Puebla Formula E race by putting his Nissan on pole for Sunday’s event.

Having qualified on the front row yesterday, Rowland tumbled to 14th at the start due to an electrical problem and barely recovered before retiring his car, which was going to be disqualified anyway as Nissan – like Porsche – had failed to properly declare its race tyres.

Pascal Wehrlein, who had won Saturday’s race on the road before his disqualification, gets a chance for redemption from second on the grid.

Alex Lynn was third fastest for Mahindra but then had his superpole lap deleted for a throttle pedal map infrngement..

That promoted Edoardo Mortara’s Venturi Mercedes and double champion Jean-Eric Vergne’s DS Techeetah onto row two.

Jake Dennis had topped group qualifying for BMW with a brilliant group two lap, but a big lock-up in superpole left him sixth, which became fifth when Lynn was demoted to sixth.

Yet again, the top six in the championship had the messiest of the group qualifying sessions.

Saturday runner-up Rene Rast will start last after going sideways across the grass, and champion Antonio Felix da Costa made contact with Nyck de Vries at the first corner of their laps.

Stoffel Vandoorne emerged on top of that group for Mercedes but his lap was only good enough for 17th on the grid, ahead of Mitch Evans’ Jaguar and de Vries.

Points leader Robin Frijns joins da Costa on row 11.

Race one winner Lucas di Grassi again struggled in qualifying with a disappointing run to 13th for Audi in group two, where a first-corner error left Sam Bird’s Jaguar slowest and consequently 15th on the grid.

Di Grassi’s old arch-rival Sebastien Buemi topped group four but couldn’t quite make superpole so starts seventh for Nissan ahead of Envision Virgin rookie Nick Cassidy.

Tom Blomqvist was perhaps the star of the final group, putting his NIO333 ninth overall alongside Andre Lotterer’s Porsche.
