Mercedes went 1-2 as the final practice session before qualifying for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship opener in Diriyah was disrupted by two red flags.

Nyck de Vries repeated his Thursday form to set the pace in the half-hour daylight session on Friday afternoon local time, with his Mercedes team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne backing him up in second place this time, 0.177s slower.

De Vries had been quickest in the first half of the session before an initial red flag caused by Dragon Penske Autosport driver Nico Mueller spinning backwards into the wall at the crest of the circuit’s downhill section.

There was a massive flurry of improvements when practice resumed and de Vries was pushed right down to the midfield before leaping back to first place again.

There was then another red flag in the final minute when Envision Virgin’s Robin Frijns hit the wall at the bottom of the hill.

Mercedes’ customer team Venturi gave it a 1-2-3 formation as Edoardo Mortara took third, with Oliver Rowland of Nissan and Porsche’s Andre Lotterer the best of the opposition.

Sergio Sette Camara brushed the wall at the same spot where Dragon team-mate Mueller crashed, yet was still sixth quickest.

Reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa was down in 18th for DS Techeetah.
