Who is driving in Formula E? Every 2024-25 driver

7 min read

The Formula E driver market silly season might not have been as wild in 2024 as it was 12 months earlier, but the end result of another busy period is three new faces and just four unchanged line-ups for the 2024-25 season.

The grid was finally, formally completed one week before the Sao Paulo season opener that kicks off the Gen3 Evo era and it's testament to the Formula E concept that eight of the nine drivers to have won titles remain on the grid as the series heads into its second decade.

Here's the 2024-25 field in full:

Jaguar

Nick Cassidy
Mitch Evans

Jaguar did finally claim some Formula E title silverware last season - it clinched both the teams' crown and the new-for-2024 manufacturers' trophy - but the biggest prize of slipped by once again as both Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans missed out in the season finale.

Nobody at Jaguar felt the pain of that more than the pair of them - Cassidy after leading the way for much of the second half of the season, and Evans after registering a second runner-up finish in three years.

Still, the New Zealand duo remain unchanged and go again in pursuit of an elusive drivers' title.

Porsche

Pascal Wehrlein
Antonio Felix da Costa

Porsche sticks with an unchanged line-up for a third - but potentially last - season in a row.

Pascal Wehrlein triumphed in last season's three-way title showdown against Jaguar duo Cassidy and Evans and will defend his Formula E drivers' championship with a Porsche team he heads into his fifth season with.

Antonio Felix da Costa seemed destined to be heading for the door midway through the 2024 campaign, but a remarkable saga reached a once-implausible end as a commitment for 2024-25 was reached - the result of some reconciliation and da Costa's improbable run of four victories in five races in the second half of last season.

But it appears likely that this one-season extension to their commitment will mark the conclusion of the Porsche-da Costa partnership.

DS Penske

Jean-Eric Vergne
Maximilian Guenther

Formula E's only two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne remains in the colours of the DS brand he clinched his titles with in 2017-18 and 2018-19 as the DS Penske alliance enters its third campaign.

But there's a new name on the other side of the garage, as the only Formula E driver line-up featuring two champions has been broken up.

The two Stellantis brands in the field have essentially engaged in a driver trade, with Stoffel Vandoorne swapping to Maserati and Maximilian Guenther heading the other way to take up a DS seat alongside Vergne.

Guenther provided the Maserati team's biggest highlights in its otherwise tricky first two years in the championship, taking a win in Jakarta in 2023 and in Tokyo a year later.

Nissan

Oliver Rowland
Norman Nato

But for an illness-enforced absence, last season's surprise package Oliver Rowland could well have been in the thick of the title fight heading into the London season finale.

But while he won't be carrying the #1 in 2024-25, Rowland will start the campaign as someone the opposition will be wary of - and with his reputation well and truly intact, his outstanding 2024 campaign having banished memories of a tricky, curtailed stint at Mahindra the previous year.

Formula E's one-season maestro Norman Nato is back at Nissan following a year at Andretti. Nato was well-received by Nissan during his previous stint there in 2023, and was ultimately determined to be its best bet for the 2024-25 campaign once the team ultimately lost faith in Sacha Fenestraz - whom Rowland outscored by 130 points last season.

Andretti

Jake Dennis
Nico Mueller

Victory in just the second race of the season proved to be as good as it got for Jake Dennis and Andretti in the 2024 Formula E season as their drivers' title defence fell flat.

But it nevertheless continued a streak of at least one victory a season for that partnership, which is heading into a fifth season - Dennis having agreed a multi-year deal with Andretti last year.

Nico Mueller's underdog heroics for the Abt Cupra team last season have been rewarded with a move up the grid.

But while in 2024-25 that will be in Andretti colours, there's every chance his future lies at the Porsche works team after that. Mueller, now a Porsche factory driver, was in the frame to replace da Costa for 2024-25 and may well end up getting that seat next season instead.

Envision

Sebastien Buemi
Robin Frijns

There was a point during the spring/summer of 2024 when Envision looked as though it might make at least one change to its driver line-up, but ultimately continuity won out for 2024-25.

It's now six years since Sebastien Buemi won an E-Prix but he retains the title of joint-record-win holder (with 13, alongside Lucas di Grassi), and remains a potent force too - having scored three podiums in his first two seasons at Envision.

It's actually Frijns' sixth season with the squad, which he raced for under its Virgin Racing guise and during its transition to Envision, and with which he clinched his two Formula E victories - both in the 2018-19 season.

McLaren

Sam Bird
Taylor Barnard

Formula E stalwart Sam Bird remains with McLaren for a second campaign, having last season clinched a 12th E-Prix win that leaves him just one victory shy of record holders Buemi and di Grassi.

With Jake Hughes moving on to Maserati, McLaren has paired Bird's experience with the youth of Taylor Barnard for 2024-25.

But Barnard won't embark on his first full Formula E campaign as a total novice.

The 20-year-old, a race winner in Formula 2 this year, made his Formula E debut in Monaco in place of the injured Bird, and then scored points in both Berlin races while Bird remained on the sidelines.

Maserati

Stoffel Vandoorne
Jake Hughes

Will a Maserati move enable Stoffel Vandoorne to revitalise his reputation again?

The former McLaren Formula 1 driver heads to the Trident marque after two largely underwhelming years at DS Penske, which he'd joined for 2023 as reigning champion following Mercedes' withdrawal at the end of the 2022 season.

He will be joined by Jake Hughes in what is Formula E's only all-new driver line-up for 2024-25. Hughes, who moves from McLaren, has joined Maserati after failing to agree a new deal with his previous employer.

Lola Yamaha Abt

Lucas di Grassi
Zane Maloney

Lucas di Grassi stays with Abt - the team behind his Audi title success - for 2024-25 as it embarks on a new relationship with the incoming Lola-Yamaha effort.

And Abt's paired Formula E's most experienced driver with the only full rookie on the grid, as Sauber F1 junior Zane Maloney (pictured above) took up the team's offer to switch to Formula E at the end of his third F2 campaign.

Mahindra

Edoardo Mortara
Nyck de Vries

The fourth outfit fielding an unchanged line-up in 2024-25, Mahindra boasts 10 Formula E wins among its duo Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara.

Both were new to the team last season, with Mortara moving across from Maserati and De Vries (pictured above) returning to Formula E following his ill-fated switch to F1 with the AlphaTauri team (now RB) that lasted just 10 grands prix.

Kiro

Dan Ticktum
David Beckmann

Formula E 2024's basement team has a change of name, a change of technical set-up and a change on the driver line-up front for the coming season.

There is some continuity, as Dan Ticktum is onboard for a fourth term with the team previously known as NIO 333 and ERT.

But while Sergio Sette Camara was originally expected to join Ticktum once more, there was a late change to Kiro's plans.

The team, in its new guise, has a new Porsche supply deal for 2024-25 - and now a new Porsche driver among its ranks, too, as David Beckmann will drive its second Porsche 99X Electric.

Beckmann, who previously made two FE starts for Andretti, made his first appearance for Kiro in the pre-season test at Jarama.
