Video: Why McLaren may be starting 2023 on the back foot

After a couple years of being on a clear upward curve within F1’s midfield, McLaren fell back down to earth in 2022, losing out to Alpine and having to rely heavily on Lando Norris’s individual brilliance.

And while it will go into the 2023 campaign aiming to right the wrongs of the previous year, the likelihood is that it will have to play the waiting game to make the major progress.

There is a limitation on just how good the 2023 McLaren can be from the outset – with its development likely impacted by in-season troubleshooting last year and the fact the team’s COVID-era redundancies had a bigger effect than it had anticipated.
