Podcast: What went on beyond the record win in Eifel GP

A circuit with a record for wild, random Formula 1 races didn’t generate many surprises as the Nurburgring returned to the calendar for the Eifel Grand Prix.

But in the wake of Lewis Hamilton’s drive to a record-equalling victory, the performances of the rest of the field brought some of the 2020 F1 season’s biggest talking points back to the fore.

In the Eifel GP episode of The Race F1 Podcast, Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell to take an in-depth look at every team’s Nurburgring form as well as Hamilton’s achievement in matching Michael Schumacher’s win tally.

Despite Renault’s breakthrough podium, they point out the signs that show Daniel Ricciardo won’t be too worried about leaving.

But his 2021 destination McLaren had a tough weekend, and will have concerns about its upgrade package.

Alex Albon’s increasingly desperate position at Red Bull is back in the spotlight too, as well is Pierre Gasly’s reliably superb driving for AlphaTauri, and was Kimi Raikkonen a bit too casual about being at the back and sending George Russell flying?

The panel also addresses Racing Point’s handling of Lance Stroll’s illness, and urges Nico Hulkenberg to make sure he’s sat in a nearby cafe with a fresh COVID test result ahead of every race for the rest of this year.
