The Formula 1 driver market is the gift that keeps on giving in 2022 – but there are controversial hurdles to clear before Alpine’s move for Pierre Gasly and Colton Herta’s switch from IndyCar to AlphaTauri in Gasly’s place can go through.
Those hurdles are considered on the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast, which asks whether the superlicence rules system is fit for purpose – bearing in mind Herta, a seven-time IndyCar race winner, doesn’t yet qualifying for one – or indeed whether an exception should be made.
Gasly is an interesting choice for Alpine. The fact he would complete an all-French line-up alongside Esteban Ocon obviously holds appeal, but the current AlphaTauri driver is also a grand prix winner and has built up his credentials since his Red Bull exit.
Red Bull by contrast has made it clear that Herta is its choice to fill that vacancy if it does free Gasly from his 2023 deal. But how much of a risk is it?
