We take a close look at the new generation of Formula 1 cars in the first of our daily pre-season testing episodes of The Race F1 Podcast.

Mark Hughes, who took a good trackside look at the cars, and Gary Anderson, who spent today studying the cars technically, join Edd Straw to talk through the first day of running and reveal the secrets of these new cars.

The dynamics of the cars on track are a major talking point, with an explanation of why Max Verstappen appears to have transformed his driving style to be close to that of Alain Prost or Jenson Button and which drivers were at the other end of the spectrum in terms of their approach.

Anderson discusses the technical implications of the new cars, and explains why porpoising is a problem that has proved to be a big problem for some teams.

It’s only day one, so we don’t look too closely at the times but what matters is the impressions of the car on track and the question of whether these new cars really are an improvement for F1.
