Huge shunt ends Doohan's tricky Suzuka practice day

Alpine Formula 1 driver Jack Doohan suffered a miserable start to the Japanese Grand Prix, missing practice one and crashing heavily in second practice.

Doohan had to hand his Alpine A525 to one of Alpine's reserve drivers Ryo Hirakawa in FP1 with the Japanese driver ending up 12th, over a tenth ahead of regular Alpine driver Pierre Gasly.

Doohan had his first laps of Suzuka in an F1 car in FP2 but that only lasted four laps until Doohan lost control of his Alpine at Turn 1 and crashed into the barriers.

The impact led to serious damage to Doohan's Alpine, with the team facing a lengthy repair job to get his car ready for Saturday's track action.

Doohan walked away from the incident, visited the medical centre after the crash and was deemed OK.

The cause of the crash is yet to be known but one theory is Doohan's DRS was still open when he turned into Turn 1.

DRS has to be manually disabled with a press of the button or by applying the brakes.

The high-speed nature of Turn 1 means drivers sometimes manually disable it before pressing the brakes mid turn-in.

Doohan is going in search of his and Alpine's first point of 2025 after two point-less weekends for the team that currently sits 10th and last in the constructors' championship despite showing the pace for better.

Doohan wasn't the only driver to be caught out in FP2 as Fernando Alonso spun his Aston Martin into the gravel after Degner 1 and missed the rest of the session.
