Gary Anderson podcast: Why 2022 rules don’t go far enough

1 min read

Grand Prix winning technical director Gary Anderson takes listener questions on Formula 1’s dramatically-changed 2022 regulations and explains why they don’t go far enough in the latest episode of his weekly podcast.

Having waded through all 152 pages of the 2022 technical regulations, Gary explains how they work and just how prescriptive the new rules are in terms of aerodynamic design.

He also has a stab at the lap time increase the new rules will cause and explains how much freedom there really is for a variety of design.

Gary explains where the key performance areas to be exploited are, and how the increased reliance on ground effect with Venturi tunnels on both sides of the car will change things.

There are also detail questions, with listeners asking about the reasons for the dramatically simplified rear wing, the impact of 18-inch wheelrims and the need for the open-source components rules.

Finally, he gives his verdict on how big an impact the rule changes might have on the competitive order and the extent to which teams are already working on their designs despite the ban on 2022 aerodynamic work brought in as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Gary Anderson F1 Show is released weekly and available free from all good podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
