Williams Formula 1 team founder Frank Williams is in hospital in a stable condition.

The 78-year-old had stepped down from his role as team principal of his eponymous grand prix outfit after this year’s Italian Grand Prix, following the sale of the family-owned team to Dorilton Capital.

His presence at grands prix had been significantly reduced after he contracted pneumonia in 2016 but he had already eased off his involvement when daughter Claire was named deputy team boss in 2012.

In 2014 he made a full recovery after receiving treatment in hospital because of a pressure sore in his back.

F1’s official website published a statement from the Williams family on Tuesday.

“Sir Frank Williams has recently been admitted to hospital where he is currently in a stable condition,” it read.

“Frank’s medical condition is a private matter and therefore the family will not be releasing any further details at this time.

“We ask for you to respect the family’s privacy. The team will release a further update in due course. Thank you.”
