Franco Colapinto's participation in Formula 1's Las Vegas Grand Prix will depend on a medical examination on race day after his 50G qualifying crash.

Colapinto clipped the inside wall at the penultimate corner during the dying moments of Q2, sending his FW46 into the outside wall and ripping three of the four corners off his car.

It follows a Brazilian GP weekend in which he crashed out of qualifying and under the safety car in the race on the same day.

Colapinto skipped the usual post-qualifying media sessions after his Las Vegas crash and is now in doubt for the grand prix on Saturday night.

"During qualifying Franco sustained a significant impact of over 50G, requiring a medical check-up," a statement from Williams said.

"An impact of this magnitude is obviously significant and severe and he will need to be evaluated again tomorrow before we will know whether he is clear to race.

"Franco's health is all that matters and we are glad he is otherwise OK.

"We will provide further updates when we can."

Should Colapinto be fit to compete, it's likely his Williams will start from the pitlane given the significant damage sustained.

It comes in the midst of a second costly crash streak of Williams's 2024 season with multiple incidents across Mexico and Brazil already giving the team an extensive pre-Vegas repair job and leaving it short on spare parts.
