F1 podcast: The contrasting fortunes of Australia's star drivers

1 min read

With the Australian Grand Prix looming, The Race F1 Podcast takes a look at the nation’s rising talent and its struggling star in this week’s episode.

There’s a special guest this week as Edd Straw and Mark Hughes are joined by Melbourne-based motorsport journalist and podcaster Michael Lamonato to discuss Australia's two biggest F1 names - Oscar Piastri and Daniel Ricciardo - and, of course, preview the Albert Park race.

Piastri’s development is a big topic of conversation, as the panel try to unpick Piastri’s performances amid a tricky start to the year for McLaren, and how he has become a more confident and assured F1 driver after brilliant second half of 2023.

There’s little doubt he’s the nation’s main hope for success this weekend as Daniel Ricciardo hasn’t managed to start 2024 in the way he and fans in Australia will have wanted.

Lamonato discusses Ricciardo’s loss of confidence in the past, his hope that it doesn’t become a bigger factor again, and how more people are willing to doubt the eight-time grand prix winner and whether he can return to a top team in the future.
