F1 podcast: Could Ferrari really overturn Sainz’s penalty?

1 min read

We ask whether Carlos Sainz’s Australian Grand Prix five-second penalty could be rescinded given Ferrari has petitioned for the right to review the stewards’ decision in the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast.

Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm join Edd Straw to explain how the process works and whether Ferrari will have enough evidence to trigger the review, let alone have the chance to convince stewards to change their minds and remove a penalty that relegated Sainz from fourth on the road to 12th in the final result.

With Sainz having said in the build-up to the Australian GP that Ferrari’s car concept has a lower ceiling than Red Bull in terms of development potential, what team principal Fred Vasseur has said about its upgrade plan for the upcoming races is discussed.

We also touch on Ferrari’s criticism of Red Bull’s cost cap penalty, as well as Vasseur’s comments on Red Bull’s DRS advantage.

And with Ferrari having banked only 26 points this year, we also evaluate the performance of Charles Leclerc and Sainz so far in 2023.
