Formula 1 presenter and the voice of Netflix’s Drive to Survive series Will Buxton has emerged as a candidate to join Fox's IndyCar broadcast team in 2025.

Sources have confirmed to The Race a story that first appeared in the Sports Business Journal that Buxton is being targeted by Fox Sports to join its commentary team this year.

Fox is taking over IndyCar’s television coverage from NBC and wants to put in place the best team possible to front its broadcasts for the new season.

Buxton is best known for his work in F1, most recently having been a presenter for the official F1TV channel – which includes the Weekend Warm-Up and its post-event shows.

However, he is no stranger to working with networks in the United States. He first worked in F1 for the Speed channel from 2010, which was owned by Fox, until it lost the broadcast rights.

Buxton then moved across to NBC Sports where, alongside his work in the F1 pitlane, he also joined its team for IndyCar races until 2017.

When NBC lost the rights to F1 for 2018, Buxton began working for F1 directly as the lead presenter of its digital output.

It is understood that no decision has been made yet by either Buxton or Fox about what they intend to do for 2025, and whether the focus will be IndyCar or to stay exclusively in F1.

A full-time move to IndyCar would, however, mark a career shift for him – and would trigger a reshuffle of F1’s own broadcast arrangements.

Should Buxton make the switch to IndyCar then it would have a big impact on his availability to work in F1 over the start of the 2025 season - as he would be effectively ruled out for the first half of the year.

There are eight direct clashes of Formula 1 weekends and IndyCar events between the Thermal Club IndyCar Grand Prix on March 23 (which is the same weekend as the Chinese GP) and the IndyCar season finale at the Nashville Superspeedway on August 31 which takes place when the Dutch GP is on.

The early conclusion of IndyCar at the end of August would, however, free Buxton up for any of the final nine F1 rounds from the Italian Grand Prix on September 7.

Coincidentally, in an arrangement that was agreed before the Fox news emerged, Buxton is due to host the official launch of the Prema IndyCar team at General Motors's facility in Concord, North Carolina on January 10.
