Lando Norris led a McLaren 1-2 in the third practice session at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as the MCL60 thrived in cooler conditions.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen looked potent as Red Bull conducted its early running on the hard tyre - while the rest of the field favoured mediums - but his run did not match the McLarens late on.

Norris's best lap, a 1m16.098s, was achieved despite a small slide in the final corner, with team-mate Oscar Piastri clawing back a tenth in the final sector to end up 0.044s behind overall.

Verstappen, for his part, was a quarter of a second down.

The rest of the competitors do not appear to be in the mix for pole.

Mercedes briefly led with George Russell, but its late-session attempts on fresh softs came up well short of what McLaren had managed to do.

Russell in fourth ended up two tenths up on Hamilton, but this was enough for a difference of four positions. Hamilton also had a major spin after getting his wheels on the dirty part of the surface off-line at Turn 9, but avoided making contact with anything.

Carlos Sainz led the way for Ferrari in fifth, with Charles Leclerc - still seemingly on the back foot after his crash on Friday - only 11th.

Red Bull's second team RB was towards the sharp end for most of the session, with Daniel Ricciardo ending up an eye-catching sixth and Yuki Tsunoda in ninth - the pair split by Alex Albon (Williams) and Nico Hulkenberg (Haas).

The under-pressure Sergio Perez began the session a quarter of a second off Verstappen, but dropped to four tenths behind on their next push laps on hards and ended up a similar gap behind on softs - which left him 14th.

There were some major front tyre lock-ups throughout the session, including for Leclerc and Verstappen, although none topped the massive lock-up Pierre Gasly had at Turn 1 - Gasly's front right ending up in a vicious cycle of dragging across the asphalt, beginning to spin and then dragging again, meaning damage in separate patches as the alpine driver reported a brake issue.
