Bring Back V10s: Mansell’s dramatic 1994 Williams F1 return

by Matt Beer
1 min read

Nigel Mansell made a shock return to Formula 1 with Williams during 1994, following the death of Ayrton Senna.

The whole off-track intrigue around Mansell’s comeback – only a year and a half after he dramatically left F1 for what was then the CART Indycar World Series in America – and the ups and downs of his on-track performance are the subject of our classic F1 stories podcast Bring Back V10s this week.

Ex-F1 driver Karun Chandhok and Edd Straw join host Glenn Freeman to look at exactly who was behind the moves to get Mansell back in a Williams, what it took to get him there and how it was viewed inside in the team – including by its title contender Damon Hill.

They also discuss the tense battle between Mansell and David Coulthard over the 1995 Williams seat, a fight in which Mansell was defeated despite winning the 1994 finale.
