Over Christmas our writers are picking some of their favourite content from The Race’s 2021 season to share again. Here’s an unsurprising choice from Edd Straw:

As I’d lobbied from the very start of Bring Back V10s for an episode on Andrea Moda, it was great that Glenn Freeman relented and allowed an episode on one of F1’s great strugglers.

But it was crowned by Perry McCarthy’s appearance, during which he revealed not only the lighter side of this absurd team, but also the more serious side that is sometimes overlooked.

Special guest Perry McCarthy joins host Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw to recall what it was like being part of the shambolic Andrea Moda F1 team that appeared in 1992.

We revisit how the team ended up joining F1 and its rollercoaster journey once it got there. From explaining why it was thrown out of the first race it turned up to and how its F1 tale came to an abrupt end when team owner Andrea Sassetti was arrested in the paddock in Belgium and the team was banned from F1 a week later.

McCarthy gives his account of several haphazard moments from his time with the team, including losing his licence seven hours after he’d been given it and being made to run used wets on a dry track at his home race.
