Fernando Alonso has been summoned to see the Formula 1 stewards for allegedly changing direction too many times in defence during the Canadian Grand Prix.
Front-row starter Alonso had a disappointing race after his heroics in the wet qualifying session, losing ground by staying out until lap 28 before his first pitstop.
He also felt he was losing eight tenths of a second per lap due to “an engine problem with the battery system” that meant his Alpine was “clipping in the middle of the straight” and leaving him just trying to “overdrive in the corners to keep the DRS train”.
That left him seventh behind team-mate Esteban Ocon at the finish, and defending against the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas.
The stewards’ summons did not reference the incident that Alonso had been summoned for, but onboard footage of the last lap shows the Alpine appearing to make multiple defensive moves early on the straight between the hairpin and final chicane.
Bottas was also summoned to the stewards, confirming that it was the defending against Bottas that has landed Alonso in the stewards’ office.
