MotoGP will follow in the footsteps of Formula 1 to host its own virtual race on their officially licensed video game.

Riders already confirmed to be taking part include reigning champion Marc Marquez along with Valentino Rossi, Maverick Viñales, Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins.

The race will be six laps long and held around the virtual recreation of the Mugello circuit. There will also be a five-minute qualifying session to determine the starting grid.

The race will take place on March 29 at 2PM UK time and will be available to watch live on MotoGP’s official YouTube channel.

This isn’t MotoGP’s first venture into Esports competitions as it has held an official Esports series since 2017.

The online pro-draft qualifying phase of the competition is underway with two of the three online challenges, tasking gamers to set the fastest time around a certain track and with a certain rider, having been completed.

The in-person events are due to start in May at Mugello and on the same weekend as the Italian Grand Prix.

With the current mass cancellation of global sporting events due to the coronavirus outbreak, even MotoGP’s Esport Championship may face changes to its format or timing.
