Pecco Bagnaia topped a crash-strewn second practice session for MotoGP’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with a new all-time lap record ahead of title rival Jorge Martin.

The works Ducati rider beat his own record, set at the San Marino GP two weeks ago, to top the timesheet with a 1m30.286s, almost two-tenths ahead of Pramac rider Martin.

Marc Marquez, who won the last race, was third quickest with a 1m30.585s for Gresini Ducati ahead of Ducati’s Enea Bastianini.

A stellar performance from Yamaha factory rider Fabio Quartararo took him to fifth as the highest-placed non-Ducati.

The crash chaos started early on, with KTM’s Jack Miller sliding off at Turn 6 just four minutes into the session while Bagnaia and Martin were already trading times at the top with Martin ahead at this point.

Pedro Acosta was the next to crash on his Tech3 KTM at Turn 14, having seen his San Marino GP end at the same place a fortnight ago.

Both Martin and Bagnaia were into the 1m30s 15 minutes into the session, leading the way, with Marquez in sixth with a 1m31.602s.

Martin led at the halfway mark, with a 1m30.844s, ahead of Bagnaia and Acosta, with Marquez fourth ahead of VR46 Ducati’s Marco Bezzecchi.

Alex Marquez crashed his Gresini Ducati with 20 minutes remaining as his brother, who had come in for a tyre change, returned to the garage, seemingly unhappy with the soft compound.

Augusto Fernandez was the next faller on his Tech3 machine, interrupting a stellar lap from Martin, though the time was not deleted despite the Pramac rider appearing to pass through the yellow flags.

Marquez went second fastest into the final 10 minutes, with a 1m30.585s, before Bagnaia set the fastest time of all - a 1m30.286s.

The closing five minutes featured a slew of crashes, with Martin down at Turn 8 before VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio took a visibly painful fall at Turn 10 and was seen departing the scene holding onto the left shoulder - an injury to which caused him to miss the Aragon GP.

Brad Binder then went down at Turn 6, which forces the KTM rider through Q1 on Saturday, while Bastianini crashed his Ducati at Turn 14 but still finished the session in fourth.

Franco Morbidelli was sixth for Pramac ahead of Bezzecchi. Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro both made it straight into Q2, separated by Acosta.

Both factory KTMs and Fernandez will have to make it through Q1, as well as all four Hondas, Di Giannantonio, Alex Marquez and both Trackhouse Aprilias.

Factory Yamaha rider Alex Rins was forced to sit out the session due to a high fever.
