George Russell has changed his helmet design for his switch to the Mercedes Formula 1 team out of respect for Michael Schumacher.

Russell’s helmet designs have so far been predominantly red, which was also the colour that Schumacher used for the majority of his F1 career.

“Quite different in colours compared to what I’ve had previously,” said Russell in a video revealing his new design.

“I’ve gone for quite a bold black this season. The reason for that is I wanted to bring forward a really bold colour.

“I’ve mainly had red on my helmets previously but a red helmet in a Mercedes I thought is very Michael Schumacher, and I wanted to respect that and go in a different direction.

“I’ve brought forward the black, I’ve got the red on the side with the [sponsor] Crowdstrike, and bringing forward this blue detailing which I really love.

“I think it looks really cool and really aggressive.”

Schumacher, who is continuing his rehabilitation from the head injury he suffered in a skiing accident at the end of 2013, raced for Mercedes when he made his F1 comeback for the 2010-12 seasons.

He had switched to mainly red designs from previous blue, white and red helmets early in his time at Ferrari.
