Ferrari never claimed it would instantly topple Red Bull going into the 2023 Formula 1 season, but it was at least very optimistic that it had solved its 2022 problems and would be a stronger challenger.

Yet it’s started this year weaker than it began 2022. Edd Straw, Scott Mitchell-Malm and Ben Anderson look at why that’s the case on The Race F1 Podcast, plus what it means for new team boss Fred Vasseur, whether the Bahrain Grand Prix might’ve been deceptive, and if Ferrari’s title bid is already over.

They also assess another famous team that’s begun 2023 with a step backwards: McLaren. Its off-season wrong turns – and potential for things to get better during the year – are analysed, as is how Oscar Piastri’s time at McLaren has begun.

Alpine’s start to the season is analysed too, after a Bahrain GP in which odd circumstances skewed impressions of how competitive it actually is.
