F1 podcast: Alonso’s non-penalty and tension at Red Bull

by Valentin Khorounzhiy

The 2023 Formula 1 season already has its first penalty controversy and its first piece of intra-team angst at a top team.

Fernando Alonso initially had his Saudi Arabian Grand Prix podium taken away when a penalty relating to an early pitstop was belatedly awarded, then had it given back again four hours later in a decision that exposed how shaky parts of the F1 regulations are.

And while Red Bull took another 1-2, this time it was Sergio Perez ahead of Max Verstappen after a battle that played out on team radio and the timing screens with the world champion not keen to follow his team’s requests for a gentle end to the race.

All of which gives Mark Hughes, Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm plenty to delve into on The Race F1 Podcast even before assessing all the significant performances – good and bad – from the rest of the field and answering questions from The Race Members’ Club.
