Alpine’s protest of Fernando Alonso’s hefty 30-second penalty at the United States Grand Prix will be assessed on the Thursday before Formula 1’s Mexico GP.

Alonso initially finished the race in Austin in seventh place after a strong recovery from a clash with Lance Stroll that sent him airborne.

But a post-race protest of both Alonso and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez led to the Alpine driver receiving a stop-go penalty that was converted into a 30-second time penalty.

That dropped him from seventh to 15th place.

Haas protested on the grounds that Alpine allowed Alonso to race with a damaged car following three separate occasions earlier in the year where Haas was forced to pit its driver Kevin Magnussen to repair damage that warranted a black and orange flag.

Alpine announced its intention to protest that penalty after the race and the FIA has now confirmed when it will determine if that protest is admissible.

This Thursday at 6pm local time (Mexico City) there will be a video conference to decide if it’s admissible with a team representative from both Haas and Alpine present.

If the protest lodged by Alpine is deemed admissible then there will be a separate hearing that will take place at a later date.
