Alpine Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling near Lugano in Switzerland.

The team said he was “conscious and well in himself, and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning”.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that he was involved in a collision with a car and taken to a local hospital.

Gazzetta’s initial report suggested possible fractures, with the BBC’s chief F1 writer Andrew Benson subsequently reporting that Alonso may have a broken jaw.

There is no indication of any potential impact on Alonso’s readiness for the 2021 season, which kicks off in Bahrain on March 28.

The Alpine team said no further updates would be given before tomorrow morning.

Alonso is returning to Formula 1 with Alpine this season after two seasons away, during which he has won the Le Mans 24 Hours twice and been crowned World Endurance champion as well as contesting the Dakar Rally and making two further Indianapolis 500 attempts.
