The Australian Grand Prix may have been cancelled, but The Race F1 Podcast still found some racing to talk about by following Max Verstappen and a mixture of other real-world and sim racers in action.

The Race All-Star Esports Battle took place on the day that the Australian GP should have been staged, with Formula 1 correspondents Scott Mitchell and Edd Straw staying up long into the night to follow it in Melbourne.

From Verstappen’s heat win, through two high-quality qualifying races involving top sim racers, the stage was set for a spectacular final, which was won by Jernej Simoncic.

This sparks a discussion about the quality of the event, as well as whether the COVID-19 epidemic means the stage is set for sim racing to fill in for conventional motorsport.

For the second half of the podcast, Mark Hughes joins in to discuss the implications of the cancellation of at least the first part of the season and how things might be reorganised to allow a season to take place.
