Fernando Alonso has lost his ninth place finish in Formula 1’s inaugural Miami Grand Prix after receiving a second five-second time penalty after the race.
In the closing stages of the race, the Alpine driver was trying to limit the damage of a five-second penalty for colliding with AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly into Turn 1.
That penalty was applied at the chequered flag and it dropped him behind his team-mate Esteban Ocon, who had charged from the back, but he was still ninth after shading the Williams of Alex Albon by a couple of tenths of a second on the timing screen.
But Alonso has now been demoted to 11th place by a second five-second penalty and awarded an additional one penalty point.
The penalty was caused by Alonso leaving the track at the Turn 14 chicane and gaining what stewards felt was a lasting advantage.
The penalty promotes Albon into ninth place, marking Williams’ best finish of the 2022 season so far, and elevates Lance Stroll into the final points-paying position for Aston Martin after he was able to survive a late-race collision with Kevin Magnussen.
Stroll finishes just 0.102s ahead of Alonso in the final classification.
Daniel Ricciardo finished 11th initially and would have been promoted into 10th place had he not received a five-second penalty of his own cutting the track at Turn 12 and gaining a lasting advantage.
